My online writing career has a surprising history...

Ok, today is the last day to enroll in *The Fearless Writer Challenge.*

If you’re still making up your mind, I wanted to share my personal story about online education with you.

Goes like this:

I was born a tightarse into a family of tightarses.

My 104-year-old grandma was born during the Great Depression. Nobody bought anything new. Ever.

Example:

Grandma Denning cut up her own wedding dress to make my mother's first baby outfit.

She taught me to believe spending money was always bad. She taught me to pinch pennies and scrape up discount products. She meant well…

…but it screwed me in many ways.

Example:

When I went to buy my first online course, I had an honest-to-god anxiety attack.

I knew the course would make me more money… but it cost $500. I had $943 in my personal savings account.

At that time, I was really bad at committing and finishing things. I hesitated. I thought about it for weeks.

Then the enrollment deadline happened. I felt the same fear I’d felt all along. My fingers were shaking…

...and I did it anyway.

Now for the plot twist.

The biggest benefit of buying my first course wasn’t the information.

The biggest benefit was the people.

I'm still friends with many of them.

They all had a similar goal as me to use writing to make a full-time living.

Did any of us know how to do that?

No.

Were we determined as hell?

Yes.

For the first time, I wasn't alone anymore. The people in that group shared ideas, tested everything, and learned fast. We had the power of community.

The ROI from that $500-course investment is well over $100K.

(I know many of you will think that sounds like B.S. Remember what I said: the information itself was not worth $100,000. The people I met were. The tips we learned together. The algorithms tricks we figured out. The strategies we made. Easily $100K.)

Bottom line here:

That old Great Depression fear of investing in myself is gone.

I now buy a course, coaching, or mastermind every month.

My budget for learning and meeting new people is unlimited.

Example:

Earlier this year, I spent $7,500 on social media coaching a few months ago. I'm very good at social already. This guy is making me better.

A couple months ago, I spent $18,000 on business coaching. I'm running a 7-figure business. I want it to get bigger.

My skill stack earned me millions of dollars online. Reinvesting in that skill stack has a higher return than stocks, gold, real estate, or crypto.

Anyway, the point.

2025 is now officially underway.

(Went fast, didn't it?)

So today, I’m going to ask you the question I ask myself:

“How will you feel at the end of 2025 if you’re in the exact spot you are now?”

And look.

I’m well aware you could chase online writing success yourself, for free. The thing is, though:

You won’t do that.

(I can show you screenshots of emails from readers who have been consuming my work for years, and they haven’t made a single step forward.)

And if you do move forward, you won’t really get it for “free.”

You will still pay a cost in confusion, in uncertainty, and your most valuable resource: time.

Now then.

The choice is yours.

You can invest, upgrade your network, and make 2 years of progress in just 28 days.

Or you can go back to the average path. Inactive. Tentative. Scared. Ultimately looking back in a year’s time and wondering:

“Why the hell didn’t I start moving sooner??”

Every writer leaves behind two graves when they die. The first one holds the body. That’s not so important. The second one holds the ideas they never got to write. That’s why I’m so intense about writing. It’s why I publish seven to ten blogs per week. It’s why I’m on LinkedIn, Twitter, and Substack constantly. I’ve never been worried about writing too much. I’m terrified I’ll write too little. What if I leave behind some of my best ideas? What if I never get the chance to talk about...
